The Bulgarian Stressed and Unstressed Vowel System. A Corpus Study

چکیده

The reduction of the six Bulgarian vowels (i, ɛ, a, ɜ, ɔ, u) to a fouror (in some dialects) three-vowel subsystem (i, (ɜ), ɜ, u) in unstressed syllables is generally accepted. But a number of studies disagree on the exact nature of the reduction process. Claims differ as to whether or not /a/ merges phonetically with /ɜ/, and /ɔ/ with /u/, or whether the assumed neutralized oppositions take a phonetically intermediate quality ([ɐ] and [o]). Previous acoustic analyses have been based on very few, and almost exclusively male speakers. The present study uses all the men’s and women’s vowels from the Babel contemporary standard Bulgarian (CSB) read speech corpus. Mid-vowel F1 and F2 values were normalized to remove inter-speaker differences and statistical comparisons of stressed and unstressed vowel productions performed. Results confirm the raising of unstressed /a/ and /ɔ/ reported previously, but raising is found to affect all vowels when unstressed except /i/. Unstressed /a/ and /ɔ/ are raised to the quality of stressed /ɜ/ and /u/ respectively (effectively neutralizing the opposition), but remain distinct from unstressed /ɜ/ and /u/, which are raised from their stressed vowel positions. The mechanism underlying the reduction process is discussed.

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

Position-dependent vowel reduction in Russian

The present paper deals with the problem of quality and quantity change (reduction) of unstressed vowels in Russian depending on their position relative to the stressed syllable and to the word boundaries. Quality change is measured by calculating the probability of vowel omission or replacement by another vowel phoneme. The study is based on a large corpus of read speech (over 30 hours). The r...

Reduction of unstressed central and back vowels in Contemporary Standard Bulgarian

This paper reports two experiments that examine unstressed vowel reduction and neutralisation in Contemporary Standard Bulgarian. Stress-dependent F1 and F2 frequency variation was measured for the central and back vowel pairs in careful speech. The results reveal a less unequivocal picture of the pairwise convergence of formant frequencies than has previously been reported: the data confirm a ...

An acoustic study of the interaction between stressed and unstressed syllables in spoken Mandarin

This study examines the acoustic correlates of relative prominence in connected Mandarin speech, particularly those acoustic manifestations that reveal an interaction between stressed and unstressed syllables. The acoustic measurements are primarily concerned with segment duration, intensity, and F0. This study shows that: (1) stressed CV syllables have significantly longer consonant and vowel ...
